Dust Suppression and Compaction Water on Dubai Sites
By the Dubai Water Tankers team · Published · Updated
What water is used for dust suppression and compaction in Dubai?
Construction sites in Dubai usually use salt (non-potable) water for dust suppression and soil compaction, where the project specification allows it, delivered in 5,000 or 10,000-gallon tankers. Compaction needs the soil at its target moisture from the lab test; dust control needs regular spraying of haul roads and stockpiles. Salt water must never enter concrete.
- Salt water is common for compaction and dust, if the spec allows
- Compaction aims for the soil's optimum moisture content from lab tests
- Dust spraying frequency rises with heat and wind
- Keep salt water away from concrete, pools and welfare units

- Compaction: soil compacts best at a particular moisture content. Too dry and it won’t reach the required density; too wet and it pumps and ruts.
- Dust suppression: unpaved haul roads, stockpiles and excavations throw up dust that affects workers, neighbours and equipment. Dubai Municipality expects construction sites to control dust, and regular spraying is the simplest way.
Salt water or sweet water?
For earthworks, many projects use salt (non-potable) water because it is cheaper per gallon and water quality doesn’t matter for soil. Two conditions:
- Your specification or consultant allows it. Some specs restrict salt water near foundations or structures; check before ordering.
- It never touches concrete. Chlorides corrode steel reinforcement; the American Concrete Institute advises against seawater in reinforced concrete.
Salt water comes in separate tankers — a drinking-water tanker must carry drinking water only — so plan your salt and sweet deliveries as two streams.
How much water for compaction?
Compaction water depends on the soil, its current moisture and the target from the lab (commonly a Proctor-type test giving the optimum moisture content). A practical approach:
- Get the target moisture content from your geotechnical results.
- Measure the fill’s current moisture.
- The difference × the dry weight of soil per layer = water to add per layer.
Because every fill differs, use the first few layers to calibrate, then book tanker loads to match your earthworks programme.
How much for dust suppression?
It depends on road length, surface, traffic, temperature and wind. Summer afternoons dry roads fast. Start with a fixed daily spraying round, watch where dust returns first, and adjust. Many sites take a 5,000 or 10,000-gallon salt water load daily during dry, windy periods.
Keep your water streams separate
| Stream | Water | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Earthworks | Salt (non-potable) | Compaction, dust, haul roads |
| Structure | Sweet | Mixing, curing |
| People | Sweet (potable) | Drinking, welfare units, washing |
Label site tanks clearly so salt water can’t end up in the mixer or the welfare cabins.
