How Much Water Does a Dubai Household Use Per Day?

By the Dubai Water Tankers team · Published · Updated

How much water does a person use per day in Dubai?

Estimates vary: the Federal Electricity and Water Authority has put average UAE use at about 550 litres per person per day, while the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has cited around 353 litres. Your own villa can be far higher or lower, so the reliable number is your DEWA bill's monthly consumption divided by 30.

  • UAE estimates: ~353 to ~550 L per person per day
  • Your DEWA bill ÷ 30 = your daily use
  • Gardens and pools can double a villa's use
  • One 2,500-gal load ≈ 9,464 L

The national figures

The UAE has one of the highest per-person water consumption rates in the world. Two figures are commonly quoted:

  • About 550 litres per person per day, cited by the Federal Electricity and Water Authority (reported by Khaleej Times).
  • About 353 litres per person per day, cited by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment.

Researchers at Loughborough University, writing for the Royal Geographical Society, also used the 550-litre figure. The gap between the two comes from what’s counted: national averages can include landscaping and other uses, not just what comes out of household taps.

Either way, these are averages. A two-bedroom townhouse with no garden and a five-bedroom villa with a lawn and pool are very different.

Your own number: the DEWA bill

The most reliable figure for your home is your own meter.

  1. Open a recent DEWA bill (or the app) and find the water consumption for the month. It’s shown in cubic metres (m³) or, on older bills, imperial gallons (1 IG = 4.546 L).
  2. Divide by the number of days in the billing period.
  3. Compare summer and winter bills. Summer use is usually much higher because of irrigation, pools and more showers.

Example: a bill showing 45 m³ for 30 days = 1.5 m³ (1,500 litres) a day. For a family of five that’s 300 litres each.

What uses the most water in a villa

  • Garden irrigation. Lawns and shrubs in summer are often the single biggest use.
  • Swimming pool top-ups. Dubai’s heat evaporates a lot of water; see pool evaporation in Dubai.
  • Showers and baths, then laundry, toilets and the kitchen.
  • Car washing with a hose.

Turning daily use into tanker deliveries

If you rely on tankers (a new villa before connection, repeated outages, or a site office), use:

days per load = load size in litres ÷ daily use in litres

Daily useOne 2,500-gal load (≈ 9,464 L) lasts
800 L≈ 12 days
1,500 L≈ 6 days
2,500 L≈ 4 days

Your tank size limits how much you can take at once; check villa water tank sizes.

No meter yet? Use the tank

In a new villa before the DEWA connection, there’s no bill. Fill the tank, then measure the water level at the same time each day for three or four days. The drop × tank length × width = litres used per day. Once you know it, we can set a regular delivery schedule so you never run out.
