What Is "Sweet Water"? A Guide for New Dubai Residents
By the Dubai Water Tankers team · Published · Updated
What is sweet water in Dubai?
In Dubai and across the Gulf, "sweet water" means fresh, potable water, the opposite of salt water. Most of it is seawater that has been desalinated and treated. When you order a sweet water tanker, you're ordering potable water for homes, pools, concrete and drinking stations, delivered in a truck that carries sweet water only.
- Sweet water = fresh, potable tanker water (not bottled)
- Mostly desalinated seawater in Dubai
- Used for homes, pools, concrete and welfare
- Salt water is non-potable and for site use only

“Sweet water” is a direct translation of the Arabic ماء حلو (maa’ hilw), used across the Gulf for fresh water. It doesn’t mean sugary. It means not salty. You’ll hear it on construction sites, from building watchmen and on every tanker company’s advert.
In everyday Dubai use:
- Sweet water = fresh, potable water you can drink, cook and wash with.
- Salt water = non-potable water with a high salt content, used for site compaction and dust control.
Where Dubai’s sweet water comes from
The UAE has very little natural fresh water, so most potable water is made by desalination: removing salt from seawater. Research published by the Royal Geographical Society notes that desalination is a major and energy-intensive source of the UAE’s potable water.
Tanker companies fill sweet water at approved stations. One example is EGA’s Jebel Ali desalination plant, which supplies potable water through pipelines and a dedicated tanker filling station.

How to make sure you’re getting it
Ask for sweet water by name when ordering, and check:
- the truck is clearly marked in Arabic and English, as Dubai Municipality’s guideline requires for sweet water tankers;
- the supplier fills at an approved station;
- the truck never carries salt or site water.
Our sweet water trucks carry sweet water only. More in is tanker water safe to drink.
Other water you’ll hear about
- Salt water: non-potable, for construction compaction and dust only.
- TSE (treated sewage effluent): recycled wastewater used for irrigation and some industrial uses, never for drinking.
- Distilled water: very pure water for industry, not normally delivered by tanker to homes.
