How Many Tankers Does It Take to Fill a Swimming Pool?

How many water tankers does it take to fill a swimming pool?
Calculate the pool volume in cubic metres (length × width × average depth), then divide by 9.46, the volume of one 2,500-gallon tanker load, and round up. A 10 × 4 m pool with an average depth of 1.4 m holds 56 m³, so it needs six loads. Use sweet water only.
- Volume (m³) = length × width × average depth
- Loads = volume ÷ 9.46, rounded up
- 56 m³ pool ≈ 6 loads of 2,500 gallons
- Sweet water only: no salt or recycled water

Rectangular pools
Volume (m³) = length × width × average depth
Average depth = (shallow end depth + deep end depth) ÷ 2. For a pool that goes from 1.1 m to 1.7 m, the average is 1.4 m.
Round pools
Volume = 3.14 × radius × radius × average depth
Freeform pools
Split the shape into rectangles and circles, work out each, and add them up. Or ask your pool builder; the volume is usually in the pool’s handover documents.
Fill level: pools are filled to the middle of the skimmer, not the very top. Subtract 10–15 cm from the depth if you want to be precise.
Step 2: convert to tanker loads
One 2,500-US-gallon load is about 9,464 litres, or 9.46 m³.
Loads = pool volume (m³) ÷ 9.46, rounded up.
Worked examples
| Pool (L × W × average depth) | Volume | Loads of 2,500 gal |
|---|---|---|
| 6 × 3 × 1.3 m | 23.4 m³ | 3 (2.5, rounded up) |
| 8 × 4 × 1.4 m | 44.8 m³ | 5 (4.7) |
| 10 × 4 × 1.4 m | 56 m³ | 6 (5.9) |
| 12 × 5 × 1.5 m | 90 m³ | 10 (9.5) |
| Plunge pool 3 × 2 × 1.2 m | 7.2 m³ | 1 (part load) |
Where the last load is only partly needed, a smaller final drop (for example 1,000 gallons) can save money. Tell us the volume and we’ll suggest the mix. Need the conversions? See the gallons to litres chart.
Step 3: plan the fill with your pool company
- Before the first load: the pool should be clean, repaired, and signed off by your pool company if it’s a new pool or a refurbishment.
- Access: the hose goes from the truck to the pool. Confirm the route, especially through gardens or side passages, and how far the truck can park.
- Timing: several loads can arrive back-to-back on the same day, or across a day or two. Book them as one job so the trucks are scheduled together.
- After the fill: your pool company balances the water (chlorine, pH, alkalinity) and starts filtration. Book them for straight after the last load.
Why sweet water only
Pool equipment, finishes and swimmers all need fresh water. Salt water (from a construction-site salt tanker) is non-potable, can damage equipment and finishes, and isn’t what a salt-chlorinator pool needs either. Those use fresh water with a controlled amount of pool salt added by your pool company. See sweet, salt and TSE water.
Top-ups in summer
Dubai’s heat evaporates a lot of pool water. Researchers estimated that Palm Jumeirah’s pools alone lose around 600 million litres a year to evaporation. Small top-ups from 200 gallons keep the level at the skimmer. See pool water evaporation in Dubai.
