DEWA Water Shutdowns: How Villa Owners Can Prepare
By the Dubai Water Tankers team · Published · Updated
How do I prepare my villa for a DEWA water shutdown?
Before a planned DEWA water shutdown, make sure the underground tank is full, note how long the work will last, and estimate whether the stored water covers that time. If it won't, book a sweet water tanker for the morning of the shutdown rather than waiting until the tank runs dry, when many neighbours call at once.
- A full underground tank is your buffer during works
- Book a tanker early: demand spikes in shutdown areas
- Turn the pump off if the tank empties
- Check DEWA notices and community emails for the times

Planned water shutdowns for network work are usually announced in advance: through DEWA notices, SMS, your community management company or the building or community WhatsApp group. The notice normally gives a date, a start and end time and the affected area. Save it. If you’re not sure your street is included, call DEWA on 991 with your premise number.
Step 1: work out how long your tank lasts
Your villa doesn’t lose water the moment DEWA closes the valve. You keep running from the underground tank until it’s empty. So the real question is: does my tank hold enough water for the length of the shutdown?
- Find your tank size (see villa water tank sizes).
- Estimate your daily use. Many families find this from their DEWA bill: divide the monthly consumption by 30.
- Divide the tank volume by daily use. That’s roughly how many days you can last.
If the shutdown is 8 hours and your tank holds two days of water, you’ll be fine. If it’s a multi-day job, or your tank is small, plan a delivery.
Step 2: start the shutdown with a full tank
The day before, let the tank fill completely from the mains. If the float valve is slow or the tank never seems to fill, get it checked now, not on shutdown day.
Step 3: cut use while the supply is off
- Run washing machines and dishwashers before the shutdown.
- Turn off garden irrigation on the villa’s own system, which can empty a tank fast.
- Pause the pool auto-fill if you have one.
- Shorter showers for a day make a real difference.
Step 4: book a tanker early
Shutdowns affect whole streets. When they overrun, many villas run dry at the same time and every supplier gets the same calls. Booking early (the evening before or the morning of) gets you a fixed slot. Tell us:
- your community and villa number with a location pin,
- the shutdown times from the notice,
- your tank size and roughly how full it is.
We’ll suggest whether a top-up before or a refill during the shutdown makes more sense. See villa water tank refill.
If the tank empties anyway
Switch the booster pump off so it doesn’t run dry, then order a sweet water tanker. Our emergency water tanker runs 24/7. Once water is back, turn the pump on and open an upstairs tap to clear air from the pipes.
After the work
When DEWA restores supply, the first water can look cloudy as pipes refill. Let a tap run for a minute before drinking. If your underground tank was emptied completely, check it for sediment; it may be a good moment to book tank cleaning and a refill.
