Tanker Water vs DEWA Water: Cost, Quality and When Each Makes Sense
By the Dubai Water Tankers team · Published · Updated
Is tanker water more expensive than DEWA water?
Yes. Per litre, DEWA mains water is much cheaper than tanker water, because a tanker price includes the truck, driver, fuel and the trip to your door. Tankers make sense when mains water isn't available or isn't enough: before a DEWA connection, during outages or shutdowns, on construction sites, or for large one-off fills like pools.
- DEWA mains water is cheaper per litre
- Tanker price = water + truck, driver, fuel and delivery
- Use tankers when mains water is missing or not enough

DEWA water reaches your tank through a pipe network. You pay a tariff per unit of water, set in slabs by how much you use each month, plus other charges on your bill. The network is shared by millions of customers, so the cost per litre is low.
Tanker water has to be filled at a station, driven across Dubai, and pumped into your tank by a driver. The water itself is only part of the price; the rest is the truck, fuel, driver time, maintenance and the trip. That’s why, per litre, a tanker always costs more than the mains.
So the question isn’t “which is cheaper”. It’s “when is a tanker worth it?”
How to compare them yourself
Use the same unit: cost per 1,000 litres (1 m³).
- DEWA: take your bill’s water charges and divide by your consumption in m³. Check DEWA’s official slab tariff for the current rates; they depend on customer type and monthly use.
- Tanker: divide the delivered price by the load in m³ (2,500 US gallons ≈ 9.46 m³).
You’ll see the gap clearly. That’s normal and expected.
When a tanker is the right choice
| Situation | Why a tanker makes sense |
|---|---|
| New villa, no DEWA connection yet | No mains water at all; see water before a DEWA connection |
| Outage or planned shutdown | The mains is off; see preparing for a DEWA shutdown |
| Weak supply that can’t keep up | The tank never fills in summer; a top-up bridges the gap |
| After tank cleaning | Refilling from the mains can take hours; see refill after cleaning |
| Filling a pool | Tens of cubic metres at once, faster than a hose |
| Construction sites and camps | Often no permanent connection yet |
When to stick with DEWA
If your mains supply works and your tank fills normally, there’s no reason to buy tanker water for everyday use. Fix leaks, cut irrigation waste and use the mains.
Quality
Both should be potable if you buy sweet water from a sweet water tanker filled at an approved station. Dubai Municipality’s guideline says sweet water tankers should carry sweet water only. The difference is how it travels. A clean tank and a dedicated truck matter; see is tanker water safe to drink.
